Overview
Hawaii International Child is one of a select number of adoption agencies licensed by the Vietnamese Department of International Adoptions (DIA) to seek adoptive families for children in Vietnam.
History of Adoption
Vietnam has a long history of international adoption. As a result of the Vietnam War, the population of orphans, both Vietnamese as well as AmerAsian (children of Vietnamese women and American service men) increased dramatically. Americans adopted tens of thousands of Vietnamese orphans, many of whom were airlifted in so called baby lifts to the United States. While the number of Vietnamese adoptions to the United States eventually decreased, Americans continued to adopt from Vietnam. In the late 1990's and again in 2000, adoptions were temporarily halted. In 2006 Vietnam and the United States signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Vietnam reopened its doors to international adoption.
