Overview

HIC is working with a number of social welfare organizations to help and assist orphans in Ethiopia. The Ethiopia Adoption Program is one of the most affordable and flexible programs that HIC offers. It is also a very important program, if for no other reason then the fact that millions of children are dying each year in Africa, due to starvation and disease. In 2005, U.S. citizens adopted approximately 400 children from Ethiopia. In 2006 that number nearly doubled and continues to increase. Children vary in age from infant to 15 years old and usually reside in orphanages. Siblings are available as well as special needs children

History of Adoption

Ethiopia, located in the Northeaster part of Africa, is one of the oldest countries in the world. Rich in history and culture, Ethiopia is knows as the “The Cradle of Humanity” and is the home of Queen of Sheba. Seventeen years of civil war in Ethiopia (1974 until 1991) bankrupted the country and left millions of adults and children in poverty. There are hundreds of thousands of families. With a democratic and forward thinking government, international adoption has been an acceptable method of helping orphaned children for the past 20 years. In recent years adoption from Ethiopia has become increasingly popular. The government has reorganized its adoption process and children are being placed with families throughout North America and Europe.
